Choose the right date source
To put capture time in a filename, check the image metadata first. Finder text replacement and numbering suit simple renames, but a date in a naming format is not automatically the photo’s capture date. Do not substitute a download or extraction time for an unknown capture time.

| Source | Meaning | Check before using |
|---|---|---|
| Capture date | Reads the original image date first, then tries the digitized date and TIFF date. | The fields may be missing or inaccurate. A scan or edited export may carry a date different from the original photograph. |
| File creation date | When this file was created in the file system. | Copying, downloading, or extracting may change it. Use it only when that is the date you intend. |
| File modification date | The modification time recorded for the file. | Editing or exporting can update it. It is not a reliable substitute for capture time. |
Get the exercise and inspect the expected result
The ZIP contains three geometric practice images based on the site’s existing sample, with no private photos or location data. The first two have the same assigned capture time, 2026-06-14 09:30:00 UTC. The third deliberately has no date. Extract into a new folder and import only the three JPGs, within Free’s limit of 3 files per batch.
Exercise: number images taken in the same second
- Practice input
- 01-same-time.jpg, 02-same-time.jpg, and 03-no-date.jpg. Rename the first two; use the third to inspect missing metadata. Download practice file
- Rule settings
- Capture date formatted as yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss in UTC, followed by a three-digit counter starting at 1, with _ as the separator. Check that the list is ordered 01, 02, 03.
- Preview result
01-same-time.jpg2026-06-14_09-30-00_001.jpg02-same-time.jpg2026-06-14_09-30-00_002.jpg- Checks and recovery
- These results apply only to the first two images. 03-no-date.jpg has no capture date. Set When No Result to Skip File, inspect the failure, then remove it from this list and regenerate the first two.
Practice files contain no personal information. Generating a preview does not change the files.
Combine capture date and counter
Create a local rule called Photo date practice. It needs only capture date and counter parts. Do not add AI or extension parts; the app preserves the extension.
- Add Capture Date and open More Options. Enter yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss in Custom Format, choose UTC, and set When No Result to Skip File. MM is the month and mm is the minute.
- Add a Counter after the date: numeric, starting at 1, padded to three digits. It distinguishes the two same-second images. Check the starting number for each batch.
- Set the rule separator to _ and save. Choose an appropriate output time zone for real photos; this exercise uses UTC so you can compare the exact expected names.

- Counter

Preview the dates and ordering
Select the saved rule, import the three extracted JPGs, confirm their list order, and click Generate Names. The filenames in Finder should still be unchanged. The first two should share a date but have different counters; handle the third separately.
- Check for the date 2026-06-14, time 09-30-00, counters 001 and 002, and the retained .jpg extension. If they differ, check the output time zone, format capitalization, and list order.
- Counters follow the current batch order. They do not automatically continue across batches or prove that all images are sorted by capture time. Regenerate and check after reordering or replacing files.
Resolve missing dates and conflicts first
03-no-date.jpg deliberately has no capture date. With Skip File selected in the previous step, it cannot produce a complete name. Omit Part would only leave out the date; it would not recover the original capture time.
- Remove 03-no-date.jpg from this file list without deleting it from disk. Keep its original name. Regenerate the first two suggestions and confirm counters 001 and 002.
- For real files without a trustworthy date, keep the original name or choose another rule whose meaning is explicit. Do not ask AI to guess an exact capture time from the image.
- If the destination already contains a matching filename, change the counter start or add fixed text, then preview again. Do not delete or overwrite existing photos to finish the exercise.
Apply the first two names and verify Undo
Confirm that only the two dated images are selected and no conflicts remain, then rename them. If folder access is requested, choose the practice folder.
- In Finder, verify the first two names against the example, confirm 03-no-date.jpg is unchanged, and check that all three files remain. Open the images to confirm they are readable.
- Do not move or rename these practice files in another app. Click Undo in the success message, then check that 01-same-time.jpg and 02-same-time.jpg are restored.
- If only some changes succeed or Undo fails, check the actual disk state before acting on the error. External moves, renames, conflicting files, or permission changes can prevent restoration.
Common questions about photo dates
Confirm the source before choosing a format. Changing a filename template alone does not resolve these cases.
Why is a screenshot or downloaded image missing a capture date?
Screenshots may lack capture metadata, and sharing or exporting can remove it. A date in the filename does not prove the corresponding field exists. Keep the name or explicitly choose file creation date; label the two sources accurately.
Why is the capture time several hours different?
Check the output time zone first. An embedded offset is used when available; without one, interpretation depends on the system time zone. The camera clock or metadata may also be wrong. This exercise includes a UTC offset and uses UTC output.
Can I rename files directly inside a Photos library?
This guide is for standalone image files in Finder. Export practice copies from Photos and check that the needed metadata is retained. Do not rename files inside the library package. Renaming an exported file does not change the library item’s title.
Does date-based renaming need AI?
No. Available date metadata and counters are processed locally. Consider a vision model only for names that describe the image, and review its suggestions. It cannot recover an unknown capture date.
Use the workflow with your own files
Start with copies of a few real photos. Use the saved rule to check date sources, output time zone, and conflicts before increasing the batch. For names based on image content, see the image feature guide; if you are new, begin with the starter exercise.
